Everyday I have the pleasure of working with and meeting the most incredible Mama’s. Walking this path of Mamahood in such a graceful inspiring way. Working, creating and consciously parenting. So many moving parts, all the while grounding, breathing and leading with such beauty. I am honored to share some of our Mama’s in the canyon and more.

What is the best mothering advice you were given and who gave it to you?
Coming from a large family means receiving lot of advice! My older sister Kerry always says “Listen to your intuition. Don’t let others tell you how to be a mother. You know your baby and exactly what they need and when!”
How do you nurture your soul as a mama?
I try to take as many baths as possible (with or without Sage). I love a good lavender and chamomile soak before bed! Perfect way to unwind and get Sage ready for bed!

I am an herbalist, author, teacher and the director of The School of the Sacred Wild
I loved the wonder of embodied connection I felt when I first became a mama. I used to garden on a large property and would bring Flora to work with me with her adopted grandmother who watched her as I worked on the mountains, sometimes acres away. I would work with the plants and my breasts felt like antennas that could pick up Flora's energy -- when she was hungry, when she was crying and needed a cuddle. I would always follow that mother's instinct and find that she had just woken up from a nap and was ready to feed, or was fussing for me. It has been so incredible to feel her miles away and to be able to tune into her mood, and to send her loving energy when we are apart.
Becoming a Mother amplified the archetypal nature of Mother in my relationship to the Earth, as a daughter of the planet and my ancestors, as a caretaker to the plants, soil and as a healer and teacher to my students and the communities I serve. It is also humbly continuing to teach me and remind me that perhaps more than anything else, this is a journey for me of learning how to mother myself. I am honored to share the energy of Mother with others and to teach how to form a relationship of reciprocal care with the Mother Earth so both she, and her children can thrive. This comes naturally and becoming a mother to Flora has strengthened my root to these archetypal energies. Where I am forever growing and learning like a child is how to Mother myself -- how to better care for myself, replenish my own cup, support my experiences with unconditional love, give and receive my own loving and healing energy, and nourish a safe space for myself and my heart to bloom.

What’s the most memorable thing that you have learned from your child/children?
I learn from Violet constantly, she reminds me to be fully present & honest with my feelings. She knows me better than anyone & can see through anything that is not completely authentic. I am reminded to check in with myself & ask what am I really feeling right now & share my own heart authentically.
Is there one ritual/practice you share with your child/children that you would like to share?
Throughout Violet’s life I have tried to share my own practices in a way that doesn’t pressure her to believe as I do or live the same way, but it has been such a joy to see her embrace a morning meditation & yoga practice over this last year. To see her take that time in the morning to feed her own soul before anything else has been so incredible.

What is the most memorable thing you have learned from your children?
Our children are our teachers. On so many levels and at various stages, they reflect to us where we need to continually shift, alchemize, soften, play, listen, feel, and have more fun. They remind us that presence and an open heart is the greatest gift we can offer each other.
What is the best mothering advice you were given and who gave it to you?
I’m not sure about the “best” but I read something about nurturing their emotional intelligence and it has been really helpful in dealing with conflict, It’s basically about meeting their disappointments with empathy. Instead of trying to change how they are feeling in order to make them feel better, it's about acknowledging their feelings, and allowing space for however they are feeling be ok. In this way they are able to feel safe in feeling and expressing their emotions, and are able to then move through the cycle of regeneration without stuffing or repressing them in any way.
It also gives them the gift of feeling understood, and that is something we all long for. We immediately soften our defenses when we feel heard. Then it’s much easier to find solutions.
As a mama what is your greatest gift that you are passing on to your child/children on that your mother/ancestors gave you?
I think that the greatest gift I am passing on to them is my heartsong which seeks to express itself in myriad ways, and encompasses my non-ordinary relationship with the living sacred world and the invisible realms, my belief in the inherent goodness and worth that exists in every living thing, and my devotion to living in a mindful and respectful way while being fiercely true to the wild and unbound call of my Soul.
